[Learner’s Story] Bootcamp Training to Achieve Transformation and Unleash Potential to Soar

Sunny, who has special educational needs (SEN) and autistic tendencies, has been aware of his talent in mathematics and science since childhood. Driven by his passion, he actively nurtured his skills during his studies and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. However, his job search journey has consistently presented challenges.

Through a social worker’s recommendation and referral from the Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association (PHAB), Sunny discovered Generation Hong Kong and enrolled in the “Robot Support Assistant” programme under the “The Jockey Club CLAP-TECH Pathway: Star”. He hoped to get a stable job that would allow him to utilise his strengths through the employment referral services offered in the programme, while exploring his potential to prepare for the future.

Seizing Opportunities to Unleash Talents

Sunny recalls, “During my studies, I excelled in ICT and mathematics, achieving Grade 5 in mathematics. I’ve always recognised my aptitude for logical problem-solving and developed a particular passion for programming.” When the social worker recommended this programme, he embraced the chance to expand his knowledge of robotics and hardware. Over 13 weeks, he not only learned the necessary knowledge and skills for the job but also improved his communication skills and problem-solving abilities. The programme stood out for its focus on workplace soft skills alongside technical training, which Sunny found transformative.

He stated, “The mentors provided tremendous support, but I’m especially grateful to my mentor. She helped me to identify areas for growth, such as my communication style. Now, I’ve learned to adapt, express myself clearly, and engage more effectively with others.”

Through scenario-based exercises, mock interviews, and instructor guidance, Sunny gradually mastered the essentials of effective communication. He noted significant progress in interview techniques, including maintaining eye contact, modulating his voice, and understanding the importance of presenting himself effectively. This preparation bolstered his confidence, enabling him to secure a role at Robocore Technology Ltd. via Generation’s employment referrals, a position where his talents truly shine.

Unlocking Boundless Potential

The CEO of Robocore Technology, also Sunny’s employer, shared, “New hires typically require one to two months of training, but Sunny began contributing almost immediately. He demonstrated exceptional adaptability and communication skills during a large project. His performance at work has been outstanding, and he has shown significant growth in interpersonal skills.” Roy’s praise underscores Sunny’s continuous efforts and validates the progrgamme’s alignment with industry needs, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for employment.

Looking ahead, Sunny is optimistic: “I hope my journey can encourage others to pursue their interests and strengths. Everyone has unique talents—with the right opportunities, they can thrive.” Sunny’s story highlights the potential of SEN individuals in tech, proving that with the right support, anyone can achieve remarkable success.
