Janny | Junior Data Engineer Program
Finding New Directions in Adversity – Janny’s Career Transformation
Janny was originally an auditor, but became concerned about her future as employers in the industry are introducing new technologies to reduce their reliance on manpower. In the midst of this career crisis, Generation’s junior data engineer program caught her attention and she was successfully enrolled in the program.
During the course of her studies, Janny was devastated to learn that her father had fallen gravely ill with cancer. This sudden, tragic news completely disrupted the carefully laid plans for her life. On one hand, Janny was driven by a deep filial duty to provide her ailing father with constant, personal care. Yet on the other, she remained steadfastly committed to continuing her studies, driven by a fervent desire to better herself and forge a more promising career path.
When Janny shared her poignant story with us, she recounted how, even in this darkest moment in her life, her classmates, instructor and mentor rallied together and supported her to get through this stage of her life. Every night, her classmates would convene on social platforms, offering encouragement and practical assistance that allowed Janny to keep pace with the rigorous curriculum. The course instructors, her mentor and the Generation team also extended tremendous support, enabling Janny to strike a delicate balance between her familial obligations and her studies.
Janny’s perseverance was ultimately rewarded, as the program’s career placement services facilitated her transition into a mentorship role within the STEM education industry. There, she was able to apply the technical skills she had honed, teaching students the fundamentals of programming robotic systems and game development.
Janny contrasted the collaborative, nurturing and supportive environment of the Generation program with the isolating nature of her previous auditing work. She encapsulated the essence of the Generation program in three evocative aspects: warmth, sense of belonging, and new connections.
Even after the conclusion of the program, Janny maintains the spirit of lifelong learning that had been inculcated within her during her studies. She teamed up with her classmate in the “Hong Kong Science Park x AWS DeepRacer” competition, which not only enabled her to further honing the technical prowess she had attained!
Janny’s resilience in face of adversity stands as a testament to the transformative power of the Generation model. Beyond simply imparting vocational competencies, the program cultivated an atmosphere of warmth, empathy and unwavering support that empowered Janny to overcome the formidable obstacles life had placed in her path, rediscovering the wellspring of courage and determination needed to forge a bold, new trajectory.
